Staff at the University of Bahr El-Ghazal in Wau, South Sudan, are demanding that six months of unpaid salaries be paid to them.
This comes a week after University of Juba employees hit the streets to demand for their salaries but they were ignored.
In recent days, faculty members from both schools have staged protests over unpaid salaries. They are demanding that the government repay all pay arrears at all five of South Sudan’s state universities.
“A hungry man is angry,” read one banner carried by University of Bahr El-Ghazal staff during protests on Monday.
Meanwhile, South Sudan’s education minister is expected to call an emergency meeting on Wednesday with leaders of the country’s five public colleges to discuss the situation.
In Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said it extended its ongoing industrial action by another two months to afford the government more time to address all of its demands.
Since the beginning of the strike on February 14, ASUU and the government delegation have met twice.
