The daybreak attack within Russia’s Kursk area never resulted in a gunfight, but it revealed the severity of the conflict in Kremlin territory.
According to CNN, five Russians moved forward in the bleak Sunday dawn but were killed or injured by a drone as they attempted to hide in the trees, according to thermal drone imagery.
“I have this impression that (the Russians) have unlimited people,” said Oleksandr, a unit commander with the 225th assault battalion, describing the conflict from a cafe in Sumy, Ukraine, 11 hours later.
“They send groups, and nearly no one survives. The groups will meet again the next day. The following Russians appear to be unaware of what occurred to the prior Russians. They venture there, into the unknown. Nobody informs them about it, and no one comes back.”
Oleksandr and two coworkers with whom he is sitting are having difficulty hearing because of the continual shelling. They offer a rare glimpse inside the nearly four-month Ukrainian occupation of Kursk.
The August invasion was a rare tactical triumph and strategic gain for Ukraine, while the expenditure of large personnel and armour in the attack has led to criticism that the operation’s shortages aided Russia’s advance throughout the Donbas eastern front.
Oleksandr expressed confidence in his unit’s ability to hold on but was unsure why. “I don’t know what the goal is,” he claimed. “We could walk around here for four months, then turn around and leave…” If the purpose is to keep it until a particular point, we will.”
