The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has launched 130 temporary learning centres across Gaza, allowing around 47,000 children to return to in-person education.
In a statement on Saturday, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini underscored the significance of education in restoring hope for children who have endured immense suffering due to the ongoing conflict.
“Education offers children a chance to heal and reconnect with their childhood. It is vital in helping them overcome the trauma they are experiencing,” Lazzarini stated.
He noted that over 270,000 Palestinian children are currently enrolled in UNRWA’s education programme, where they receive basic instruction in Arabic, English, mathematics, and science.

Despite reopening these centres, Lazzarini acknowledged that the challenge remains immense.
“There is still a long road ahead to ensure more children have access to learning,” he said, highlighting the situation’s urgency.
“Our goal is to prevent a lost generation of Palestinian children. The stakes are high, and there is no time to waste,” he added.
Since Israel’s military offensive began in October 2023, more than 48,500 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have been killed, with nearly 112,000 others injured. The war has devastated Gaza, though a temporary ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement took effect on January 19.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the enclave.
