Martin Griffith, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, has stated that the “impunity” for choosing war over diplomatic means and targeting humanitarian workers has never been greater than during Israel’s war on Gaza. Griffith suggested that there may be a need to establish a special tribunal to ensure accountability.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Griffith expressed disappointment over the lack of precision in Israeli attacks, especially in southern Gaza, despite earlier promises. He highlighted that the number of deaths from diseases in Gaza is surpassing those from fighting and air strikes.
Griffith noted the challenges faced by aid deliveries due to Israel’s indiscriminate bombing campaign, stating, “We do not have places of safety from which to operate — where people can gather safely to receive aid and be protected.”
Since October 7, Israel has been conducting a devastating war on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of approximately 19,000 Palestinians and injuring 51,000 others, with the majority being children and women. The aggression has also led to significant infrastructure destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis.
