Africa’s continental-wide intergovernmental organisation, the African Union has called on China to support its call for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
This is coming to the fore as Newly appointed Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang is on a week-long visit to Africa. This will be his first overseas trip as foreign minister with destination points at Angola, Benin, Egypt, Ethiopia and Gabon.
The African union has continued to lament the continent’s lack of permanent representation on the UNSC, bearing in mind that most issues on its agenda are usually related to African countries.
The UNSC consists of 15 members; 5 permanent members with veto powers and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly. Watch Rita Omodiah and Gbenga Aborewa unpack the issues at stake.
