The United States has unveiled a nearly $6 billion package of military and budget aid for Ukraine, with President Joe Biden emphasising the urgency of providing support before Donald Trump takes office next month. The package includes $2.5 billion in security assistance, $1.25 billion in military drawdown to supply weapons from US stocks, and $1.22 billion through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative for procured military equipment.
In addition to military aid, the Treasury Department has announced $3.4 billion in direct budgetary support for Ukraine. The latest package comes as Ukraine continues to defend itself from Russian aggression and as Russian forces intensify their assault in the ongoing war, which began in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude for the timely aid, highlighting its importance as Russia continues to receive support from North Korea and Iran. He called for continued Western backing to achieve a just peace and work towards peace in 2025.
The announcement follows earlier US pledges of military assistance, including artillery, armoured vehicles, and drones, and comes as Biden’s administration aims to send as much aid as possible before the looming shift in US leadership
