The United States Department of State has authorised a new $165 million weapons deal with Israel, including heavy-duty tank trailers, spare parts, toolkits, and logistical support. The equipment is expected to be delivered by 2027, adding to a previous $20 billion weapons package announced earlier this year.
This approval comes amid growing international and domestic criticism of US military support for Israel, particularly in light of ongoing concerns about Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The new deal follows significant US arms shipments to Israel, including over 10,000 bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles since the Gaza conflict began in October.
The Biden administration has faced mounting pressure from lawmakers and the public to reconsider its support due to the high civilian casualties in Gaza. Despite these concerns, the administration continues to back Israel, maintaining its role as a primary ally and arms supplier.
The ongoing conflict has had a devastating impact on Gaza, with approximately 41,100 Palestinians killed and 95,000 wounded. The war has also caused widespread displacement, a severe humanitarian crisis described as a βman-made famine,β and led to allegations of genocide, which Israel firmly denies.
The newly approved weaponry, along with other military aid, will not arrive immediately, as the F-15 fighter jets included in the earlier package are not expected to be delivered until 2029.
