A truck-ramming attack in New Orleans during New Year celebrations left at least 10 dead and over 35 injured, prompting authorities to suspect terrorism. The FBI identified the perpetrator as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen and Army veteran, who was killed in a shootout with police.
Officials reportedly found an ISIS flag in Jabbar’s vehicle, and the FBI is investigating his potential connections to extremist groups. Two homemade bombs were discovered and defused at the scene. Governor Jeff Landry stated that a manhunt is underway for possible accomplices.
The attack occurred in the French Quarter, a popular destination for celebrations. Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with bodies and injuries scattered across the area. Police confirmed the suspect acted deliberately, driving at high speeds with the intent to cause maximum harm.
This incident comes during heightened global concern over similar attacks, such as a December car-ramming at a German Christmas market.
