In a recent statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his endorsement of the efforts by the West African bloc ECOWAS concerning the situation in Niger. While not explicitly endorsing the call for military intervention made during a summit, Blinken emphasised the importance of ECOWAS’ involvement in addressing the crisis.
Highlighting the United States’ position, Blinken noted the recent emphasis on using military force as a last resort and the significance of diplomatic measures in resolving the crisis. He referred to Deputy Secretary of State Nuland’s recent visit to Niger, where she engaged with military leaders involved in the actions and stressed the urgency of restoring constitutional order. Blinken further stressed the potential risks if this restoration did not take place.
Blinken acknowledged the vital role of ECOWAS, an organisation that unites West African nations, in advocating for the return to constitutional order. He expressed the United States’ strong support for ECOWAS’ leadership and their efforts to address the situation.
Furthermore, Blinken highlighted the United States’ commitment to holding the junta accountable for their actions. He specifically mentioned ensuring the safety of President Mohamed Bazoum, who was democratically elected, as well as the safety of his family and detained government members.
