Independent Senator Bernie Sanders has said that Americans reject the sight of Palestinian children being killed in the Gaza Strip. Sanders, speaking on the Senate floor, stated, “The American people, in my view, no matter what your politics may be, do not want to be complicit in the slaughter of small kids who are bombed to death while they sleep.”
He continued, “The American people, in my view, do not want us to continue funding (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s cruel war. And I think maybe it’s time we start listening to the American people.”
The Senator expressed that across the nation, there is widespread anguish among Americans, irrespective of political leanings, over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
He criticised the use of American military aid by Israel to obstruct the delivery of humanitarian assistance, emphasising that such actions violate US law.
Sanders insisted that any nation impeding American humanitarian aid should face repercussions, including the termination of funding.
A recent Gallup poll revealed a shift in American sentiment towards Israel’s military actions in Gaza, with a majority now disapproving compared to previous months. The survey conducted from March 1 to 20 indicated a decline in approval ratings from 50% to 36% since November, while disapproval ratings rose to 55%.
In light of the ongoing bombardment of Gaza, revelations by Haaretz suggest discrepancies in reported casualties, with evidence indicating significant civilian casualties caused by Israeli military operations.
The prolonged Israeli offensive has resulted in devastating consequences for the Palestinian population, with over 32,200 deaths, 74,500 injuries, and widespread destruction of infrastructure.
Sanders condemned the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where 85% of the population faces displacement alongside acute shortages of essential supplies, exacerbating the suffering of innocent civilians.
