The United States has expressed deep concern over recent violations of a ceasefire agreement in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Rwanda-supported M23 rebel group has intensified its offensive in North Kivu province, displacing thousands.
Signed in August, the ceasefire aimed to bring stability to the troubled region, but since late October, renewed clashes have escalated the humanitarian crisis.
“The United States is gravely concerned by the ceasefire violations,” said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, urging M23 to halt its aggression.
Washington reiterated its call for Rwanda to immediately withdraw all troops and military equipment from the DR Congo.
The ceasefire, brokered by Angola, is expected to be monitored by a newly launched truce unit, which will start its work next week. However, with M23’s recent advances, the fragile peace remains at risk.
