South Sudan’s key major supporter, the United States of America has recalled her ambassador to the country for consultations over the failure of South Sudan’s duelling leaders to form a government.
US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo made this known on Monday via a Twitter post on his handle @secpompeo:
“…Called back our Ambassador to #SouthSudan for consultations as we re-evaluate our relationship with the Government of South Sudan. We will work with the region to support efforts to achieve peace and a successful political transition in South Sudan”.
The United States contributes about $1 billion annually in humanitarian aids to South Sudan and has always expressed concerns over the state of affairs in South Sudan.
Recall that trouble started in South Sudan after the country’s President Salva Kiir and rebel chief Riek Machar fell out two years after South Sudan’s hard-won independence.
State Department spokeswoman, Morgan Ortagus said the US Ambassador in Juba, Thomas Hushek, will hold talks in Washington on the re-evaluation of the relationship between both countries.
