Ruud van Nistelrooy has departed from his coaching role at Manchester United following the arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim, who started his tenure at Old Trafford on Monday. Van Nistelrooy, who previously starred as a striker for United, had served as interim head coach after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal last month, leading the team to three wins and a draw, including a 3-0 victory over Leicester in his final match.
Initially brought in as an assistant coach in July, Van Nistelrooy had hoped to remain on staff under Amorim, but United confirmed on Monday that the 48-year-old Dutchman will not be part of the new coaching line-up.
Van Nistelrooy expressed gratitude for his brief but rewarding period in charge. He concluded by thanking the fans for their unwavering support.
Amorim, who previously managed Sporting Lisbon, arrived in Manchester from Portugal on Monday, greeted at Carrington by chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox. He is United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary tenure ended in 2013. Currently, United sit 13th in the Premier League, just four points outside the top four.
The 39-year-old Amorim, who revitalised Sporting during his time there, expressed both excitement and realism about the challenges ahead. “I’m ready for this new challenge,” he said after his farewell at Sporting.
Amorim’s first match at the helm will be against Ipswich on November 24, following the international break.
