A devastating downpour has flooded several states in Nigeria’s oil rich Niger Delta, where Africa’s third longest river flows into the Atlantic Ocean, destroying critical infrastructure including roads, bridges and public facilities.
The floods have submerged at least four tertiary institutions in the region. The entire campus of Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro in Isoko North LGA is under water.
Everywhere has become impassable from the iconic administrative building to the bridges linking the two campuses, faculty building, the broadcasting house and the university health care centre.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Jacob Oboreh is yet to respond to inquiries however a top management staff called on the state government to come to the rescue of the institution.
Niger Delta University, in Amassoma Bayelsa State has reportedly been overwhelmed by the floods following the caving in of the Yenagoa-Amassoma road while Sabagreia town, Igbedi, Tombia Market, health care centres and other parts of the state remain swamped.
The Bayelsa State Government owned Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education, (IJBCOE) located in Sagbama is also completely submerged.
