Veteran Nollywood actor Amaechi Muonagor has passed on at the age of 62 after a prolonged battle with kidney disease.
The actor’s demise comes just days after publicly appealing for financial assistance to undergo a kidney transplant in India.
The news of his death was announced in a post on X by popular social media influencer and chairman of Delta State Sports Association, Morris Monye on Sunday.
Monye expressed deep sorrow over Muonagor’s passing, highlighting the actor’s talent and masterful presence on screen.
He also reflected on the community’s efforts to support Muonagor’s health journey, emphasising the pressing need for improved healthcare in the country.
Monye wrote:
“Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful.
“We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India.
“This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country.”
Born on August 20, 1962 in Idemili, Anambra State, southeast Nigeria, Muonagor had a career spanning over three decades in the movie industry as both an actor and producer, renowned for his comic roles in movies.
Some of his movies include “2 Rats” (2003), “Igodo” (1999), Issakaba (2000), Oganigwe (2001), “Aki and Pawpaw” (2021), “Aki Na Ukwa” (2003), “Karishika” (1996), “Living in Bondage” (1992), “Ukwa” (1995), and many others.
His passing follows closely on the heels of actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, who also succumbed to severe health complications on March 2, 2024, despite seeking financial assistance from the public.
While the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) claims to have established health insurance for its members, the reality remains that many actors still struggle with medical bills during illnesses, often leaning on public donations for support.
