Victor Moses’ Inter suffer Europa League final defeat against Sevilla

Moses’ Inter side lost to Sevilla in a five-goal thriller in Cologne, as the Spanish team lifted their sixth Europa League title.

The former Nigeria international came off the bench as a substitute in the 78th minute for the Italian side as they trailed 3-2.

But the 29-year-old was unable to spark his team to an equalizer, as he was involved in one of the best chances to draw Inter level late on in the 81st minute.

Moses, who won the Europa League title with Chelsea in 2013, had the ball inside the box and close to the 6-yard area.

But he was crowded out a by a couple of Sevilla players, with the ball then falling to fellow substitute Alexis Sanchez whose effort on the stretch was cleared off the line by Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.

Romelu Lukaku had opened the scoring on the night and given Inter the lead from the penalty spot with just 5 minutes in after he was brought down in the box by Diego Carlos.

But Dutch striker Luuk de Jong scored two headers – in the 12th and 33rd – to put Sevilla ahead, before Inter defender Diego Godin nodded in from Marcelo Brozovic’s free-kick in the 36th minute to level things at 2-2, in what turned out to be an exciting first half.

Lukaku was almost through on goal down the middle with 64 minutes in with defenders closing down, but he couldn’t beat Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, the Sevilla goalkeeper who came off his line to make a vital save with his left foot out-stretched.

And the 74th minute Sevilla got the winner when Diego Carlos’s spectacular overhead kick was diverted by Lukaku into his own net for an own goal, as Inter went on to lose this year’s Europa League Final, played behind closed doors in Cologne, Germany.

Sevilla, Europa League specialists, have now won the tournament for a record sixth time – and for the fourth time in seven years (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2020).
