A petrol-laden tanker along Shehu Shagari Way, Maitama—a highbrow area of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital—exploded, leaving many people injured.
The explosion also affected several passengers in a commercial vehicle, with flames billowing into the sky.
An eyewitness said commuters abandoned their vehicles on the busy road and ran to safety.
He added that the incident caused a gridlock affecting different roads, including those leading to Nicon Hilton Hotel, Chicken House, MTN, and Farmers Market.
Emergency responders rushed the victims to Maitama District Hospital for medical attention, a health official stated.
A passerby reported that the driver of the tanker fled the scene after the truck overturned.
FCT authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the full extent of the injuries or possible fatalities.
