The Karu Modern Market in Abuja was engulfed by a fire on Thursday evening.
The cause of the raging inferno could not be immediately determined, but it affected a section of the market.
As of 8 pm on Thursday, firefighters were reportedly still battling to extinguish the flames.
A shop owner, Hon. Jibreel Babangoshi, who was at the scene, described the situation as terrible.
He said, “The Karu market situation is dire. Only one fire truck was on site, and it had no water when the fire started. When they finally got water, they couldn’t gain access because shops had been constructed on every available space. The firefighters had to go through the back, from the village.
“Reinforcement came from Area 10, but access remains a challenge.
“Number of shops, worth of goods destroyed not yet known. Cause of fire not yet known. Fire started from Informal Sector section of the market”.
