Rare Snowfall Hits Johannesburg and Other Parts of South Africa

Johannesburg‘s residents woke up to snowfall on Monday as the city and other high-lying parts of South Africa were affected by a cold front. The weather services issued warnings regarding possible road closures and dangerously cold temperatures.

The snowfall in Gauteng province was a result of the cold front that arrived in South Africa late last week. This front transformed into a weather system called a “cut-off low.” Although snowfall is not entirely unprecedented in Johannesburg, which sits at an altitude of over 1,700 metres, it remains a rare occurrence. The last instances of snowfall Johannesburg were observed in 2012 and 1996.
