Seplat Energy Oil Rig Tragedy: 1 Dead, 3 Missing in Delta Collapse

One person has been confirmed deceased, while three others are unaccounted for, following the collapse of a Seplat Energy oil rig on Tuesday near Ovhor in Delta.

The oil company confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, issued by Roger Brown, its Chief Executive Officer.

Seplat noted that 92 out of the 96-member crew have been located and are safe.

“Seplat Energy regrets to announce a grave incident on the Depthwise swamp drilling rig ‘Majestic’ in the early hours of this morning. Seplat, as the operator of the SEPLAT/NNPCL joint venture, contracted the rig. It was en-route to its planned drilling location at Ovhor in Delta State when it capsized.

“92 out of the 96-member crew have been located and are safe. However, tragically, one fatality occurred during the incident, while three other rig personnel are presently unaccounted for.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the crew member who tragically lost his life and the three crew members who remain missing at the time of this report. Our emergency response and rescue efforts, in collaboration with the rig owner and the authorities, have been activated and are on the scene. Our utmost priority will continue to be the safety and wellbeing of all the affected personnel and their families.

“We will provide further details as our understanding of the incident unfolds. A comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident will ensue.”
