Angry fans at the AFCON 2023 seem to have targeted the Black Stars of Ghana, vandalising their bus in Cote d’Ivoire. The aggression appears to stem from the team’s disappointing performance in the recent match against Mozambique, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Ghana had high stakes in the game, aiming for a victory to secure a spot in the Round of 16 and pursue their next African Cup of Nations title. However, Mozambique sought to advance out of the group stage for the first time and secure their inaugural AFCON victory.
Ghana went into the break with a slim lead at halftime through a well-executed penalty by Jordan Ayew.
On resumption, Ghana was again awarded another deserved penalty which was also converted by Jordan Ayew.
This put the West African multiple AFCON Winners in pole position to secure all three points that should have secured qualification into the next round.
However, the Mozambicans relentlessly attacked, managing to equalize with a penalty at the 90+1 minute mark and subsequently scoring again in injury time, shattering Ghana’s aspirations.
With this outcome, Ghana’s chances hinge on other results to determine if they can qualify among the best third-placed teams, having amassed only two points.
Unfortunately, Mozambique is officially eliminated from the knockout stages. Surprise team Cape Verde clinched the top spot in Group B, with Egypt securing the second position.
