Local news agency Kyodo reported at least four people died in the earthquake-hit area.
Further reports indicate that the authorities are aware of at least six cases where people had been buried alive or trapped under collapsed houses.
The United States Geological Survey says at least 31 smaller aftershocks were reported near the region where the earthquake struck. The agency said aftershocks could continue for days to months to follow.
