It was a day of seismic upset at the All-England Club on Tuesday after Spanish qualifier Jessica Bouzas Maneiro stunned defending champion Marketa Vondrousova on centre court on Tuesday.
Playing in only the third Grand Slam main draw of her career, World No. 83 Bouzas Maneiro earned a memorable maiden Grand Slam primary draw victory by defeating Vondrousova in just over an hour to consign the Czech star to the history books as only the second defending to exit in the first round of the event in the Open Era and the first in 30 years.
Vondrousova entered the history books last year as the first unseeded player to win the women’s title, but she’s back in the books again in a less wanted way.
Bouzas Maneiro converted all five of her break points to complete the feat and secure her biggest career win by ranking, having never defeated a top 40 player.
The 21-year-old, who had only played a top 10 player before she had only played a Top 10 player, once said, “This is one of the most important moments in my life, in my career, here in this sport. This is amazing,”
