VP Shettima Urges Leaders to Embrace Community Service Over Material Gain

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian leaders to embody true leadership by prioritising community service and legacy-building over personal gain.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Ibapon Central Mosque in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Shettima expressed concern about the trend towards individualism and materialism, urging a shift towards spiritual obligations and community service.

“Today, the world is unfortunately marked by a mindset that values self-interest over selflessness, and many see giving back or even engaging in spiritual obligations as burdens or distractions,” Shettima remarked, highlighting the need for leaders to set a positive example.

The mosque, a multi-million-naira project funded by Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari, represents what Shettima described as “a gift for generations” and a model of continuous charity (Sadaqah Jariyah).

Reflecting on the fleeting nature of life, the Vice President encouraged leaders to focus on deeds that will outlast them.

“We must ask ourselves—what remains when this race ends?” he questioned. “All that endures are the records of our selfless deeds, our adherence to our faith, and our acts of charity.”

The newly inaugurated mosque will serve as a spiritual centre for Muslims in Ogbomoso and nearby communities, with Shettima hoping it will inspire values of unity and compassion. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Oyo State Deputy Governor Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal also commended Senator Buhari for his contribution, highlighting the importance of building a legacy rooted in faith and service.

In a moment of gratitude, Senator Buhari thanked the Vice President, state governors, National Assembly members, and community contributors, celebrating the project’s completion as a dream come true.
