Vulnerable Communities in Nigeria Receive $250,000 World Bank Disbursements

At least 10 vulnerable communities in Doma and Toto local government areas of Nasarawa State received $250,000 through the World Bank Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape, (ACReSAL) scheme.

Senior Environmental Specialist World Bank Nigeria Office and the Task Team Leader, ACReSAL, Dr Joy Iganya Agene stated this during the first loan disbursement of AcreSal community revolving funds.

Agene said there are 620 beneficiaries comprising 367 males and 253 females from five communities each from the two benefiting LGAs.

 “I am highly impressed with the modalities used for the selection. As a World Bank, we are here to implement one of our core value objectives which is aimed at lifting people out of poverty and restoring land,” Dr. Agene stated.

Also speaking at the event, National Coordinator of the ACReSAL Project, Abdulhamid Umar, and his Nasarawa State counterpart, Dr Napoleon Elias, explained that the federal government’s project which is funded by the World Bank to the tune of $700 Million seeks to tackle environmental challenges in the nineteen northern states and the FCT. It will also tackle poor land use practice and assist with best strategies towards ecological restoration.
