Liz Truss was announced on Monday as the British Prime Minister with a cabinet installed just hours after.
Some of the members of her cabinet include officials of full or partial African descent. Truss’ appointments to the ‘great offices of the state’ has excluded any white official, with some cabinet members of African descent in the team.
These members include;
Kemi Badenoch
After failing in her bid to become the Prime Minister of Britain, Kemi Badenoch has been appointed the International Trade Secretary of the UK by Lizz Truss.
Ms. Badenoch, born Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke, was born in Wimbledon, London and revealed she lived in Lagos, Nigeria during her teenage years before returning back to the UK for her university education.
Badenoch is a Member of Parliament and a Conservative representing Saffron Walden.
Kwasi Kwarteng
Kwasi Kwarteng, the son of immigrant Ghanaian parents was born in the United Kingdom and has been appointed the first black Chancellor of the Exchequer.
A scholar of excellent reputation, he has been recipient of many scholarships and attended the University of Cambridge and Harvard University.
He was the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy between January 2021 and September 2022 and was the first black man to hold the position.
He was also at some point the Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth.
Kwarteng is also a Member of Parliament for Spelthorne, Northern Surrey since 2010.
Suella Braverman
Suella Braverman, the new Home Secretary, has parents of Indian origin who emigrated to Britain from Kenya and Mauritius in the 1960s.
Her mother was born into a Hindu Tamil Mauritian family and she’s the niece of Mahen Kundasamy, former Mauritian High Commissioner to London.
She worked under Theresa May as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union. She also worked for the Advocate General for Northern Ireland and Attorney General for England and Wales.
She was the first cabinet Minister to take maternity leave after the law was reviewed. It had previously involved the resignation of a pregnant cabinet Minister.
James Cleverly
Born to a British father and a Sierra Leonean mother, James Cleverly has been appointed the British Foreign Secretary.
He was the Secretary of State for Education in 2022 and has been Member of Parliament for Braintree Essex since 2015.
He has been Minister of State for Europe and North America, Minister of State for Middle East, North Africa and North America and Chairman of the Conservative Party in the past.
Former Prime Minister, Theresa May appointed him the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union while he served Minister without Portfolio under Boris Johnson.
He’s also a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army and operates as an Army Reserve.
