WHO Reverses Position on Ebola in Ivory Coast

More than 9,700 people have died of the disease since the west African epidemic emerged in southern Guinea in December 2013, with nearly 24,000 people infected, according to the World Health Organization. Weeks after announcing there’s a suspected case of Ebola in Cote D’Ivoire, the World Health Organisation has said the teenage woman who tested positive has been found to be free of the virus after a second test.

The global health organisation announced early in August that an 18-year old Ivorian woman had tested positive for the virus after arriving from Guinea.

In a statement on Tuesday, the WHO said it is downgrading its activities in Ivory Coast and will find the source of the symptoms showed by the lady.

“With the new results from the laboratory in Lyon, the WHO considers that the patient did not have the Ebola virus disease, and further analysis on the cause of her illness is ongoing,” the WHO said.

“The WHO is now downgrading its actions in Ivory Coast from response to readiness mode.”

The second test was conducted in Lyon, France while the first was held in Ivory Coast. It had sent panic round the country as many feared it had recorded its first Ebola case in 27 years.

In Ivory Coast and neighbours, Guinea, contacts were listed and placed on monitoring and none of them showed evidence of the virus or symptoms. The WHO had sent 5,000 doses of Ebola vaccines to Ivory Coast from Guinea to tackle the virus headlong.
