Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, stated that lawmakers impeached Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker to preserve the House’s “sanctity” and “integrity.”
Speaking to reporters, Tobun explained that the unanimous decision of the 40-member Assembly led to the election of Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker.
“The Constitution empowers the House to regulate its proceedings,” Tobun said. “We felt it was time to act in the interest of our constituents and the state. The resolution was unanimous.”
Obasa, Speaker since June 2015, was impeached on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, now holds the distinction of being the first female Speaker in the South-West state.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, had been a member of the Assembly since 2007.
