Kolo Toure, a former defender for Manchester City and Arsenal, was fired by Wigan after the Championship underdogs went winless in all nine of his games in command.
Toure’s terrible reign at Wigan has already come to an end, despite only signing a three and a half year contract there on November 29.
The Latics only managed two points in Toure’s seven league games, and last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Luton left them at the bottom of the standings and four points from safety. As the pressure on Toure increased, Luton eliminated Wigan from the FA Cup following a replay.
Toure was in his first management position at Wigan when he was hired to take Leam Richardson’s place. Previously, he had assistant coaching positions with the Ivory Coast, Celtic, and Leicester.
Wigan is currently searching for their fifth permanent manager in the last three years following the 41-year-old’s resignation.
“Firstly, I’d like to thank Kolo, along with Kevin and Ash, for their efforts during their time at the football club,” Wigan chief executive Malachy Brannigan said.
“Unfortunately, the results on the field have not been as we would have liked and as tough a decision as this was, the board felt it necessary to give us the best possible chance of remaining a Championship club next season.
“We know that this time of year is a key period for any football club, ourselves included.
“Therefore, we will now work swiftly and effectively to ensure the right person is appointed as the next permanent manager of Wigan Athletic, with the immediate objective of remaining in the second tier for next season.”
