The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the sole entity capable of mounting a credible challenge to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.
Wike articulated this view during his monthly media interaction, held on Thursday at his official residence in Abuja.
Wike dismissed the notion of other political alliances, stating, “Now, you are talking about coalition. What is coalition? The only party today, that, if they put themselves well, can still challenge this government assuming, it’s PDP.”
He further elaborated on past internal party struggles, indicating that efforts were made by certain factions to take control of the PDP.
“Because let me tell you, they wanted to hijack the party. We told them no, but David Mark wanted to be chairman of the PDP. We said no,” Wike revealed.

He emphasised the role of personal interests in politics, stating, “Politics is interest. There’s nothing Atiku and Co. didn’t do to take over the national chairmanship of PDP.
That’s nothing they didn’t do. We stood firm and we said no, it will not happen.”
Wike suggested that the idea of a broader coalition only surfaced after these attempts to control the party failed. “Now, when these people realised that they could not take over the party, the issue of coalition came up. Why not just say, Wike not being be there, means that coalition has failed,” he remarked.
He concluded by highlighting the public’s sentiment towards these political maneuvers, noting, “And then, the message you send to Nigerians, because Nigerians are angry. Nigerians are angry with them.”
