Officially on the 2nd of September, Nigerian superstar, Wizkid’s groundbreaking single, ‘Essence’ certified Gold in the US. The single becomes the fastest African song to attain the feet, in 11 months, then ‘Ye’ by Burna Boy and ‘Fall’ by Davido.
The certificate was awarded to the original song which features tems alone and not the remix with Justin Bieber spotted on Billboards 13th spot.
This isn’t Wizkid’s first gold certification in the United States, In September 2020, Wizkid became the first African artist to be certified Gold (both) as a featured and lead artist for ‘One dance’ and ‘Come Closer’ featuring Canadian rapper, Drake.
A gold certification, issued by the Recording Industry Association of America [RIAA], means a song or an album has sold 500,000 copies – inclusive of both streaming equivalent and physical sales.
2018 hit song, ‘Ye’ by Grammy award-winning Nigerian musician, Burna Boy, was certified Gold in May 2021 while OBO Davido holds two Gold certifications, in 2020 and 2021 for ‘Fall’ and ‘If’ respectively.
