A group of women in Port Harcourt organised a solidarity march in support of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State. Dressed in white, the women marched from the Garrison Flyover to Isaac Boro Park, holding placards with messages like “State of Emergency is Constitutional” and “We Don’t Want Fubara,” among others.
Ifeyinwa Aguma, a former Commissioner for Social Welfare in Rivers and a supporter of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, led them. The demonstrators voiced their support for Ibok-Ette Ibas, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to oversee the state, urging him to continue his positive efforts.
This protest on Monday follows last week’s demonstration by women who expressed their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who Tinubu recently suspended due to the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
Last month, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to a persistent political crisis. He suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and the House of Assembly members for six months.
Citing “security reports,” which were prompted by two pipeline explosions in the state, Tinubu stated that the decision to declare a state of emergency was necessary.
He appointed Ibas to manage the state’s affairs until the political crisis is resolved, which has sparked significant nationwide debate.
However, on Monday, the women who protested endorsed the president’s decision, calling it constitutional.
