Liang Wang has been named the new Country Representative for Botswana by the World Bank, beginning November 15, 2022.
Wang will be in charge of the World Bank’s involvement in Botswana, which includes an active lending portfolio, a thriving knowledge collaboration, and a dynamic interaction with the government and many different stakeholders. Wang will be based in Gaborone.
Wang, a citizen of China, has over 15 years of experience working for the World Bank in East Asia, Africa, and corporate and policy duties at the Washington, DC, headquarters.
Most recently, he served as the coordinator for the World Bank’s largest lending and analysis program, China, Korea, and Mongolia national program.
“I am excited to start my tenure in Botswana,” said Wang,
“I look forward to bringing my experience in supporting middle-income countries’ transition towards high-income status to support Botswana’s efforts in achieving its aspirations.”
The objectives of Botswana Vision 2036 and the government’s National Development Plans are closely matched with the World Bank’s involvement in the country.
The World Bank’s involvement in Botswana for the next few years will be outlined in the future World Bank Group Country Partnership Framework for Botswana.
Botswana graduated from the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s portal for concessional lending, in 1974. Botswana has been a member of the organisation since 1968. In 2008, it resumed borrowing from the World Bank, and in 2009, the country office of the World Bank in Gaborone opened.
