The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Programme marked World Braille Day 2025 by reiterating its dedication to promoting inclusivity and accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
In a statement themed “Celebrating Accessibility and Inclusion for the Visually Impaired,” the EU-SDGN highlighted the need to dismantle barriers and foster an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of physical abilities, can actively participate in democratic and public life.
“In Nigeria, the EU-SDGN has been addressing these challenges through initiatives such as accessible communication tools, capacity-building programmes for PWDs, and policy advocacy to strengthen frameworks that protect their rights,” the statement read.
Jake Epelle, Founder and CEO of The Albino Foundation Africa and an EU-SDGN partner, emphasised the importance of accessibility in electoral processes. “Accessibility is not a privilege but a fundamental right. The EU-SDGN’s efforts to assess and improve assistive devices mark significant progress in ensuring no one is left behind in Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.
Epelle also noted that achieving inclusivity requires collaboration, innovation, and accountability. “Through programmes like the EU-SDGN, we are not just advocating for change but creating solutions that empower PWDs to contribute meaningfully to governance,” he added.
The World Braille Day is marked every January 4. The EU-SDGN reaffirmed its commitment to building a participatory democracy in Nigeria where no citizen is excluded from civic processes.
