World Humanitarian Day 2023: Date, History, and Significance (News Central TV)

The purpose of World Humanitarian Day is to recognise those who devote their lives to helping those in need, especially during times of crisis and conflict, and to honour their efforts.

The devastating attack of the UN building in Baghdad in 2003, which killed 22 people, including UN representative Sergio Vieira de Mello, is remembered on this day.

History

The first World Humanitarian Day was observed on August 19, 2003, when a sizable bomb attack on the UN building in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 people, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN’s Special Representative for Iraq.

In response to the Baghdad bombing and to honor the memory of those who died, the United Nations designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day five years after the General Assembly passed a resolution, with the first official observance taking place in 2009. The attack was a sobering reminder of the risks and sacrifices that humanitarian workers face in conflict zones.

Significance

The purpose of World Humanitarian Day is to increase public awareness of the difficulties faced by humanitarian workers, the value of international cooperation in resolving global crises, and the importance of safeguarding civilians and providing aid in disaster and conflict zones.

As it highlights the crucial role of humanitarian action in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations by attending to the needs of the most vulnerable and marginalised populations, World Humanitarian Day has become increasingly linked to the broader objectives of sustainable development in recent years.

Celebration

The United Nations often launches an annual campaign in the lead-up to World Humanitarian Day which is known as “The Humanitarian Heroes” and aims to recognise and celebrate the contributions of individuals who have shown extraordinary dedication to humanitarian work. Since its establishment, World Humanitarian Day has been observed globally through various events, campaigns and activities that highlight the vital role of humanitarian workers and advocate for their protection.

It is a day to reflect on the immense challenges faced by those working to provide aid and assistance, as well as an opportunity to renew the commitment to alleviate suffering and promote a more compassionate world.
