The first World Humanitarian Day was observed on August 19, 2003, when a sizable bomb attack on the UN building in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 people, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN’s Special Representative for Iraq.
In response to the Baghdad bombing and to honor the memory of those who died, the United Nations designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day five years after the General Assembly passed a resolution, with the first official observance taking place in 2009.
