World Press Freedom Day 2023: All You Need to Know

World Press Freedom Day 2023: Understanding the Reason Behind Celebrating it (News Central TV)

Every year on May 3, the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the critical part that press freedom plays in advancing democracy and development. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the right to freedom of expression as a basic human right, and this day serves as a reminder to all governments of their responsibility to respect and safeguard that right. Based on a suggestion made at the UNESCO General Conference in 1991, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared the day in 1993.

The occasion of World Press Freedom Day offers a chance to spread awareness of the value of press freedom and the dangers faced by journalists and other media professionals who cover topics of public concern. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of media professionals who put in countless hours to inform the public and hold those in positions of authority accountable.

Importance of Press Freedom

Journalists and media professionals are free to report on topics of public interest without worrying about censorship or retaliation according to the fundamental right of press freedom. As it enables the public to access accurate and trustworthy information, hold governments and other powerful actors accountable, and make informed decisions, it is crucial for the operation of democratic societies.

However, there are many places in the world where journalists and media professionals are subject to abuse, intimidation, arrest, and even violence for performing their duties. In addition to violating their human rights, this impedes the media’s capacity to play a crucial role in society.

Why May 3?

World Press Freedom Day was established on May 3 to commemorate the Windhoek Declaration, a significant statement signed by African journalists in Windhoek, Namibia, in 1991. In addition to recognizing the critical role that journalists play in advancing democracy and development, the declaration called for a free, independent, and pluralistic press in Africa.

Since then, the Windhoek Declaration has come to represent the global fight for press freedom and serve as a reminder of the need to uphold and advance the right to free expression. It has also served as inspiration for the founding of a number of organizations and initiatives dedicated to press freedom, such as the African Media Initiative, which promotes media independence and pluralism in Africa.

Theme of The World Press Freedom Day 2023

‘Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights’ is the topic for World Press Freedom Day in 2023. This theme emphasises the significance of free speech in advancing and safeguarding other human rights.

In addition to being a basic right in and of itself, freedom of expression is also necessary for the practice of numerous other rights. It allows people to voice their thoughts, look for and receive information, engage in public life, and hold those in positions of authority responsible. Without the freedom to express themselves, people are unable to fight for their rights and expose abuses of authority.
