Why May 3?
World Press Freedom Day was established on May 3 to commemorate the Windhoek Declaration, a significant statement signed by African journalists in Windhoek, Namibia, in 1991. In addition to recognizing the critical role that journalists play in advancing democracy and development, the declaration called for a free, independent, and pluralistic press in Africa.
Since then, the Windhoek Declaration has come to represent the global fight for press freedom and serve as a reminder of the need to uphold and advance the right to free expression. It has also served as inspiration for the founding of a number of organizations and initiatives dedicated to press freedom, such as the African Media Initiative, which promotes media independence and pluralism in Africa.

‘Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights’ is the topic for World Press Freedom Day in 2023. This theme emphasises the significance of free speech in advancing and safeguarding other human rights.
