Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has secured the title of the fastest woman in the women’s 100m hurdles this year. The world record holder dashed to victory with a blazing time of 12.40 seconds at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational in Kingston, beating Jamaican and reigning world champion, Danielle Williams.
During the race, Amusan trailed behind the reigning world champion, Williams, and America’s Nia Ali but surged ahead in the final stretch, surpassing the previous world-leading time of 12.42 seconds set by Tonea Marshall of the USA on April 20.
Williams claimed second place with a time of 12.46 seconds, while Christina Clemens of the USA finished third in 12.54 seconds. Jamaican athlete Yanique Thompson secured fourth place with a time of 12.59 seconds, while Nia Ali finished fifth with a time of 12.65 seconds.
Reports indicate that Amusan and other prominent athletes chose to skip the Doha Diamond League in favour of the Jamaica Invitational.
Amusan’s victory comes after winning the Diamond League in Eugene, Oregon, for three consecutive years, a remarkable achievement that silenced critics following her disappointing fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where she lost the title to Williams.
