Since 1980, September 27 has been designated as World Tourism Day by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.  This day was picked since the UNWTO Statutes were adopted on it in 1970. The passage of these Statutes is regarded as a turning point for tourism worldwide.

It is intended to increase public awareness of the role that tourism plays in the global community and to show how it influences global social, cultural, political, and economic values.

The UNWTO General Assembly voted to choose a host nation each year to serve as the Organisation’s partner in commemorating the day at its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1997. The Assembly resolved to celebrate World Tourism Day in the following geographic order at its Fifteenth Session in Beijing, China, in October 2003: 2006 in Europe, 2007 in South Asia, 2008 in the Americas, 2009 in Africa, and 2011 in the Middle East.

It was the late Nigerian native Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi who first suggested declaring September 27 of each year as World Tourism Day. In 2009, he at last received appreciation for his work. The Day’s official colour is blue.

“Tourism has never been more important for our economies or for our societies. Its potential is enormous. And so on this World Tourism Day, we celebrate tourism’s ability to drive growth while also highlighting the vital need for investments to ensure such growth is inclusive and sustainable,”

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said. “Tourism is a powerful force for progress and mutual.
