Economic activities in Damaturu, the capital of Nigeria’s Northeast state of Yobe, were shutdown as tricycle operators (NAPEP) protest daily extortion.
The drivers accused the Yobe State Road Transport Agency (YOROTA) of demanding payments and ordering a fresh registration from tricycle riders.
The protests from the tricycle riders have impaired general movement and school activities to places of employment due to the unavailability of transportation means.
According to the protesters, the economic atmosphere has been unfavourable for them and the state government was only increasing the hardship through extortion.
The State Chairman of the Tricycle Riders Association, Umaru Barau, informed journalists that the protest is nunlawful as they were not informed of it.
He however promised to grant an interview after a meeting with other stakeholders and security agencies has been completed.
