Sunday Adeyemo, often known as Igboho, a Yoruba Nation activist, has returned to Nigeria after escaping to the Republic of Benin roughly three years ago.
A statement by Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, confirmed that the Yoruba Nation activist was in the country for his mother’s burial which is scheduled to take place in Igboho and Ibadan.
In a video released online, Mr Adeyemo was seen waving to Igboho villagers as he arrived for his mother’s final funeral rites.
His mother died when he was imprisoned in the Benin Republic in 2023.
Igboho fled Nigeria in 2021 after a brutal clash between his aides and DSS agents who invaded his home in the Soka neighbourhood of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Sunday Igboho, an agitator for ethnic Yoruba independence in southern Nigeria, fled to the Benin Republic after being declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The separatist leader was caught in the Benin Republic in October 2021 while attempting to fly to Germany.
The West African country accused him of “associating with criminals”. He was just released from a Beninese prison after serving a two-year sentence.
His lawyer, Ibrahim Salami, verified two years ago that Igboho was granted conditional freedom for medical treatment but was not allowed to leave the country.
Igboho has already hailed Benin President Patrice Talon, a former Nigerian president, and Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka for their support.
