Zambia President Edgar Lungu Collapses after ‘sudden dizziness’

President Edgar Lungu collapsed Sunday afternoon during a national defence day event but government says he only experienced sudden dizziness and then recovered immediately.

In 2015, months after taking the oath of office, President Lungu suffered a similar condition caused by what the presidency said was an “oesophagus condition”.

Shortly after, Secretary to the Cabinet, Simon Miti, issued a statement to pressmen assuring the public and the international community that President Lungu “is well and has continued to discharge his duties”.

Miti explained that during the observation of the 45th Defence Force Day Commemoration and Investiture Ceremony, the President experienced “sudden dizziness” but recovered immediately.

Lungu to his car, unassisted and returned to State House.

The defence day ceremony took place at Lusaka’s Freedom Statute on Independence Avenue where the Defence Forces showcased their military prowess.

During the event, Lungu conducted an investiture ceremony to honour gallant men and women in uniform. Zambia is set for national polls in which Lungu is standing for re-election. It is scheduled for August 12.

President Lungu got into office following a by-election necessitated by ex-President Michael Sata’s demise in 2014.
