Executives of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) have put forward remote learning measures that can be adopted by government across all districts to stem the rise of COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during an online meeting with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on Friday, ARTUZ said that there was a need for the decentralisation of education management so that each district implements their own appropriate strategy for schoolers at home. Said ARTUZ:

“The crisis in our education sector emanates from the centralisation of education management.

For context-based remote learning to work, communities should be given latitude to study their context, develop a contextual learning strategy and implement it.”

ARTUZ recommends a remote learning strategy that suits available resources in each district.

The District Schools Inspectors are expected to have planning meetings with school heads and produce working strategies for distance learning for schools in their districts.

Schools are currently closed and the government has ordered school administrators to prepare for the commencement of classes even though the date has not yet been communicated.
