Zimbabwe 2023 Polls: CCC Claims ZEC Attempted to Falsify Results

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, ZEC,  according to the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), is attempting to rig the outcomes of the harmonised elections taking place on August 23 and 24, 2023.

The party claimed on X (previously Twitter) that polling agents intervened and demanded a stop to the process after presiding officers were called to modify the results.

According to the CCC, ZEC’s actions violate the law and the will of the people, and they will be resisted in a way that is both legal and constitutional. To prevent additional disagreements, the party encouraged ZEC to act honourably and accept the election results. The party claimed:

“ZEC’s unlawful attempt to undermine the will of the people by tampering with the V11s will be met with legally and constitutionally resistance. It is imperative for ZEC to act honourably and accept the will of the people to prevent further contestation of the election outcome.

The party later claimed that it sent a team to the ZEC offices after hearing news of the ZEC’s purported illegal acts to reopen vote boxes in Kwekwe.

The party claimed that it appears ZEC misled the poll workers by claiming they entered the wrong date and needed to make changes. The CCC party sees this as a calculated attempt to thwart the will of the people. The party exhorts everyone to take a position and defend the validity of the vote.

Advocate Thabani Mpofu, a legal expert, encouraged poll workers to refuse any requests from ZEC or the ZANU party to visit polling places and reopen ballot boxes.

Mpofu said: “Agents have discharged their mandate. Anyone getting a call from ZEC or ZANU requesting them to go back to polling stations to re-open ballot boxes must not heed such calls.”

He emphasised that they already have the required V11 paperwork and don’t need ZEC to provide them with anything more. He counselled them to defend the integrity of the vote by staying at home.
