Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou Wildlife Park will have a reintroduction of rhinos, thirty years since it last had one.
Park authorities said on Thursday that Gonarezhou, Zimbabwe’s second biggest wildlife park, will have rhinos returning after a long time out.
Gonarezhou, meaning “home of the elephant” is one of the Great Limpopo Transfortier Park, alongside South Africa’s famously known Kruger National Park and Mozambique’s Limpopo.
Spokesperson for Gonarezhou said black and white rhinos will soon be introduced in the park as they hope to give it a good lift of its wildlife presence.
According to Tinashe Farawo, Spokesperson for the park, she said Zimbabwe now has about 1,000 rhinos after a long battle with poaching.
Rhino and elephant horns are traded to Asia and is the motive behind poaching on the continent. The horns have been of great medicinal importance to the rest of the world but Africa’s wildlife has continued to suffer a plunge.
While the number of rhinos returning has not been revealed, its believed they’ll make for a significant number in Gonarezhou.
Zimbabwean President, Emersson Mnangagwa described the return of the rhinos as a ‘momentous conservation achievement’ for the Southern African country.
