Zimbabwe and South Africa have signed an agreement to transfer treated water from Beitbridge Water to Musina to address a significant milestone in curbing Musina’s water shortages.
Even though the transfer of treated water from Zimbabwe to Musina is seen as a medium-term solution to addressing the water scarcity challenges, the agreement showcases the potential for mutual benefits and collective problem-solving.
According to the agreement, the two countries will Kick-start an implementation plan and manage the construction of a pipeline and pump stations to transfer 15million cubic meters (41 ML/Day) of treated water from Zimbabwe to Musina in South Africa, which is expected to be completed in 2026.
However, Senzo Mchunu, South Africa’s minister of water and sanitation during the agreement deal said his ministry is working with the Vhembe district municipality in addressing challenges with the existing water infrastructure, including rehabilitating the existing but non-functional borehole, while the project is being implemented. Mchunu also expressed his gratitude to the government of Zimbabwe for the water-sharing deal which aims to change the lives of people in Musina.
