Zimbabwe has given civil servants a 100% salary increase as part of efforts to improve their welfare, according to the government-owned daily The Herald.

According to a statement from the Zimbabwe finance ministry, the salary review includes an improved $250 Covid-19 allowance for all civil servants and a $80 monthly allowance for teachers.

According to a finance ministry official, the review will begin in the security sector on March 1 and in the rest of the civil service on April 1.

Although the salary review was “exciting,” a teacher’s union representative told the newspaper that the increase in the Covid-19 allowance was still insufficient.

A representative of the nurses association stated that additional discussions regarding the allowance were scheduled for Wednesday.

In 2020, the Zimbabwe government claimed it could not afford to raise wages during a doctors’ strike that shut down the nation’s healthcare system for more than four months.
