Reports indicate that Zimbabwe has given civil personnel a 100% salary increase as part of attempts to improve their wellbeing.
In a statement from the finance ministry, the revision includes an upgraded $250 Covid-19 stipend for all federal personnel and a $80 monthly allowance for teachers.
According to a finance ministry official, the assessment will begin in the security sector on March 1 and the remainder of the civil service on April 1.
A representative of the teachers’ union interviewed by the newspaper said the review was “exciting” but said the increment of Covid-19 allowance was still low.
A spokesperson of the nurses group stated that additional discussions regarding the allowance were scheduled for Wednesday.
In 2020, the Zimbabwean government claimed it could not afford to raise wages amid a physicians’ strike that shut down the nation’s healthcare system for more than four months.
