The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a warning to the public regarding a syndicate circulating counterfeit United States $100 notes.
The group, comprising both men and women, is reportedly operating in Mashonaland West province, particularly in the provincial capital, Chinhoyi.
Inspector Ian Kohwera, the ZRP provincial spokesperson, informed NewZimbabwe.com that the authorities are actively tracking the perpetrators.
“Police in Mashonaland West Province are concerned about the circulation of fake US dollar notes, particularly in Chinhoyi.
“These fraudulent individuals, posing as genuine customers, are targeting the business community, including retail shops, service stations, bars, and even street vendors, with counterfeit $100 notes.
“The syndicate, made up of both men and women, uses various vehicles, such as Toyota Fortuners and other luxury cars,” Kohwera explained.
The scammers purchase low-value items to obtain genuine currency as change, thereby defrauding businesses and individuals.
Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the syndicate’s arrest to report to their nearest police station.
“We appeal to the business community to remain vigilant and thoroughly verify $100 notes before accepting them as payment,” Kohwera added.
The police have also advised the public to familiarise themselves with the security features of US banknotes and other currencies to avoid falling victim to the scam.
