Zimbabweans Protest Passport Price Hike in South Africa

Zimbabweans Protest Passport Price Hike in South Africa...

Hundreds of Zimbabweans in Pretoria, South Africa, protested against the recent hike in passport fees at the Zimbabwean Embassy.

The Zimbabwean government has increased the cost of an ordinary passport from USD 53 to USD 318, sparking widespread outrage.

This substancial fee hike has added financial strain on Zimbabweans, who already face economic difficulties.

The protest was organised by various diaspora groups and activists, with participants chanting slogans and carrying placards condemning the fee increase.

Protesters argued that the new fees are unaffordable for the average Zimbabwean and demanded the government reconsider and lower the fees.

“This fee hike is a clear indication that the government is out of touch with the realities faced by its citizens,” one of the protesters stated.

The Zimbabwean government had defended the increase, citing rising production costs and the need for revenue. However, this explanation did little to ease the frustration.

The Zimbabwean diaspora, which contributes significantly to the economy through remittances, sees the high passport fees as a barrier to maintaining this connection.

The protest has gained international attention, with human rights organisations condemning the fee hike and urging the Zimbabwean government to address citizens’ concerns.
