Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has called for the establishment of large-scale irrigation farms as a key solution to the worsening food insecurity in the Lake Chad Basin region.
Speaking at the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri during a panel discussion on food security, Zulum highlighted the vast arable land in the region, which, if properly utilised, could significantly boost agricultural output.
He emphasised the need for collaboration between regional governors, key partners, and the United Nations to establish and manage large-scale irrigation farms.

“We need to invest in irrigation. Irrigated agriculture is the only solution. Unfortunately, our investment in this area is very low,” Zulum stated, noting that over 70% of Borno State’s 72,000 sq km landmass is arable.
With a rapidly growing population, Zulum warned that dependence on rainfed and subsistence farming is unsustainable. He urged research into climate-resilient crops and modern farming techniques to ensure food security.
The governor also stressed the importance of livestock development, pointing out that irrigation schemes could support pasture growth, thus boosting beef and milk production in the region.
